Welcoming
A rich, warm palette of colors and textures helped transform this house into a home
The concept of an outdoor room is popular these days, especially in warmer climates. This home's outdoor room is defined through extensive use of handmade stoneware tiles.
The interior designer Phyllis Taylor's directive to Elle Terry Leonard of Architectural Ceramics was simple: "I want this outdoor room to be within one tile of being completely over the top," she said.
She asked Leonard to design an inviting, very decorative outdoor room that matched the style of the rest of the house. The challenge was to make the room such an integral part of the house that it looked like it had always been there.
Architectural Ceramics designed and manufactured all the tiles. Research into Mediterranean homes, especially those along the southern Spanish coast, informed the pattern choices. The top third of the wall features a diamond pattern, and the rest of the wall is decorated with scallop-shaped tiles. Matte blues and greens were chosen to create a cooling effect during the hot summer months.
