The owners of this renovated rural home selected their gas fire for its clean, unfussy lines, as well as its energy efficiency

Exploring different heating options for your home involves weighing up factors such as energy use and safety. But when it comes to choosing a fire, looks often play a crucial part in the decision-making process.

That was the case for the owners of this traditional rural bungalow. The house had previously been heated by electricity and an old wood-burning fireplace, which the homeowner says was not a practical choice for a household with a young family.

"We were looking for an option that was energy-efficient and safe. But our choice really came down to the look of our Escea gas fire. We liked the clean, simple lines and wanted an attractive fire to be a focal point for our lounge," she says.

Nigel Bamford, Escea's managing director, hears this sort of comment frequently.

"People are attracted by the look of our fires, then discover the practical benefits. For example, in most cases an Escea fire will fit into the space left when an open or enclosed wood burner is removed. Our fires can be used with natural gas or LPG."

With maximum heat outputs of between 7.5kW and 9kW, an Escea fire will heat the living spaces of most New Zealand homes, he says. The fires can also be controlled remotely, using Escea's i-con system. This allows the fire to be controlled from a cell phone or the internet.
