Villa in the country

As in any traditional Spanish and Italian villa, the Coatesville house features a hard, flagstone floor. But in this house the flooring is polished concrete, coloured with the Peter Fell system to provide a weathered look, and laid to re-create the look of large flagstones.

Designer Mark Wilson says he specified the Peter Fell system as it was an ideal way to replicate an aged look.

"The system also offered the flexibility to provide a ground inlay of exposed aggregate in the entrance," he says. "This inlay extends along the passages in the bedroom wings."

With the Peter Fell system, the colour is provided by a liquid oxide, and is an integral part of the concrete. This means the colour can't wear off or fade, no matter how heavy the traffic is in any particular area either inside or out.

The Peter Fell system is available in a wide variety of colours and textures. It can also be combined with aggregate mixes for a customised finish, as shown in this project. In addition to concrete, the colouring system can be extended to plaster and grout, to ensure a seamless look.

Concrete coloured with the Peter Fell system can be used wherever concrete features around the home. As well as flooring, it frequently appears in benchtops and hearths. Outside, it can be used for patios, paths, driveways and pool surrounds.

The company says the flooring is practical, hard-wearing and easy to maintain. A concrete floor also offers the benefit of thermal insulation. In winter it absorbs the sun's heat by day, releasing this slowly during the evening.
