This award-winning house demonstrates innovative use of Smartwood joinery
Award-winning designs are often created with customised construction solutions. However, ready access to innovative products and an understanding of application possibilities can improve your chances of recognition.
This four-bedroom, waterfront home on Auckland's North Shore took top prize in the Registered Master Builders 2004 House Of The Year award.
It made a strong architectural statement for Smartwood composite joinery, says Shane Walden, marketing manager for Architectural Profiles Ltd (APL).
Don Nelson and Associates, who designed the house, used Smartwood joinery to create the windows and doors, including the curved facades and segmented expanses of overhead glazing, says Walden.
On this occasion Smartwood joinery had Swamp Totara on the interior face and mid-grey powder coated aluminium on the outside. Composite construction allows timber and aluminium to be combined in one product.
A natural interior timber grain provides a rich, traditional ambience, while the exterior aluminium reduces the need for ongoing maintenance.
