Versatile strength
The new prison is constructed in the architectural vernacualr of concrete, glass and steel Dominion Contractors provided the broad skill set required
A variety of core disciplines was required for the creation of the new prison development. As a main subcontractor to Fletcher Construction, Dominion Constructors was responsible for the concrete structure of the Carpark, Gatehouse, Prisoner Support Building, Accommodation A and B blocks, the Health facility and all associated overhead walkways and paths. Much of this concrete work involved the construction of all foundations, columns, beams and slabs and the placing of all precast wall and floor components.
Dominion Constructors were also awarded the carpentry package for the Prisoner Support Building and the Gatehouse. The company built the internal framing, walls, ceilings and all timber finishings for these.
Dominion used mainly structural-grade concrete, introduced in a mixture of different strengths and design finishes. Most of the vertical finishes were fair faced, with a mixture of broom and exposed aggregate finishes applied to pathways and service roads. All products, finishes and materials were chosen by Fletcher Construction in association with architects Stephenson & Turner.
In areas of the development where reinforcing is particularly dense, a special design mix of self-compacting concrete was used, as traditional concrete methods were impractical. This allowed Dominion Constructors to pour directly into the formwork, with no vibration required to achieve the finished product.
