Using natural stone to brighten up your kitchen

Calacatta Blanco from Smartstone acts almost like another light source in this Southern Queensland home

Project: Toowoomba Residence Two by Claire Stevens Interior Design

The brief for the Toowoomba Residence was to combine practical design with high-end, modern finishes to create a ‘forever family home’ that would also feel like a sanctuary away from the office. Drawing inspiration from Spicers Peak Lodge, natural materials were employed to create a textured and moody palette that complemented the sprawling green lawns and landscaped gardens outside.

“Calacatta Blanco was selected as the feature for the kitchen in this home to tie in the timber and bluestone elements within the house. Without being too bold, the stone is a striking contrast to the joinery and with the solid stone back to the island bench,” says Interior Designer Claire Stevens.

In addition to the kitchen island bench and breakfast bar, Smartstone Calacatta Blanco was used in bathroom vanity countertops. One of Smartstone’s most popular colours in the exclusive range, this surface features brown-grey veining on a luminous white background accented with gold highlights.

Small areas, rather than large rooms, were designed and decorated to create a sense of homeliness and intimacy in the large space. The majority of furniture was sourced specifically for the house through local Australian designers, as well as artwork from local and Indigenous artists.
