The concept of layering spaces takes on a whole new meaning with this new home from the glazed front door it is possible to see right through two wings of the house and an internal courtyard to the garden at the rear.
Andy Pettifer of Fairview Whakatane, the firm that fabricated the Aluminium Systems Ltd (ASL) door and window joinery for the project, says the house is virtually a glass pavilion with views in all directions.
"Easiclean aluminium sliders and stackers open up all the main rooms to the internal courtyard, which features a Zen-like meditation garden," he says. "To complement this theme, the owner chose to have the joinery powdercoated in the colour Headland. This is a red shade commonly specified in Australia, but to our knowledge only used twice in New Zealand. The Assa Abloy hardware was colour matched to the doors and windows."
Pettifer says the Easiclean doors glide along the outside of the slider base, rather than within the sill, which means there are no narrow grooves where dirt can be trapped.
"This makes it much easier to keep the joinery clean, hence the name Easiclean," he says. "The joinery also features clear laminated glass that blocks 99% of the sun's UV rays, which will help to preserve the appearance of the polished timber floors."
Other joinery includes a hinged door, fixed windows and small fanlights in the bedrooms.
