A mixed palette of warm neutrals and off-white tones enhances the architecture and the play of light in this canal-side residence

Waterfront living is like a permanent vacation the picturesque outlook and rippling waterways create a strong sense of relaxation all year round.

This house in Waterbury Lane, Foster City, CA, was designed to provide such a haven. Remodeled by Grayzco Construction, the house features a dramatic high-gabled roof with a central chimney and symmetrical quarter-light windows.

To enhance the play of light on the walls, the designer specified a variety of neutral paint colors from Kelly-Moore. The Double Teardrop redwood siding is painted in Kelly-Moore Golden Season.

Inside, the entry soars to a double-height void defined by a contemporary architectural treatment that accentuates light and shadow. The recurring D-shape, seen in the quarter-light windows on the exterior, is also evident in the entry.

Victor Gray of Grayzco Construction says Kelly-Moore Moon Maiden was specified for the walls in the entrance and living areas, with Swiss Coffee on the ceilings.

Rather than repeat the same color throughout the house, the owners chose to tailor the palette to suit each room and its outlook. The guest bedroom, for example, is painted in Kelly-Moore Soft Shoulders, a warm off-white color that complements the Canyon maple flooring.

The walls in the master bathroom are painted in Kelly-Moore Swiss Coffee. These walls follow the line of the roof gable, and are punctuated on one side by a series of geometric cutouts that open to the master bedroom. Here again, the play of light and shadow creates visual interest.

Warm brown-toned tiles from Spanish company Porcelanosa, and minimalist Duravit bathroomware continue the contemporary theme.
