It's often the way the sites with the best views are also the steepest. Designing and building a contemporary house that would maximise such a site was the brief given to the company responsible for this NSW project.

Starr Constructions' solution provided a multistorey house that steps down the hill to sit amidst the tree canopy. A layered facade references the uneven nature of the rocky outcrop, helping ensure the house fits in with the immediate surroundings.

The contemporary design and high level of finish extend to the interior, which features an open-plan living area. A freestanding, see-through fireplace divides the space, defining the separate areas.

Starr Constructions, established nearly 10 years ago, specialises in custom homes. Director Nino Sanzari says the company's reputation for proven workmanship and direct approach to all aspects of construction helped the firm win the 2006/2007 Building Excellence Award from the Master Builders' Association and the 2008/2009 HIA NSW Housing Award.
