Universal appeal

R attan, a spiny vine growing in the southeast Asian rainforests, was used to make chariots in biblical times. Today, this strong, pliable plant is made into furniture designed to suit a variety of decors.

Vivien Png of September Imports has been visiting the Philippines for the past 20 years and selecting locally produced, handcrafted rattan furniture and accessories.

The company stocks a range of lounge and dining settings, occasional chairs, coffee, side and console tables, table lamps, planters and decorative accessories.

Finished in hues of amber, mahogany, tortoiseshell and fruitwood, the furniture is accented with twill matt, leather binding, woven rattan peel, wicker and carved wood. Almost all items have removable neutral-toned, textured-cotton upholstery.

"With their mix of classical proportions and contemporary styling, our designs fit just as easily into an elegant living room as a modern apartment," says Png.

Among the most popular styles is the Manhattan line of armchairs, sofas and dining chairs with its strips of leather, hand-woven around the rattan frame. The Contemporary line features rattan splits wrapped over steel and wicker frames, and supported by stainless steel legs.
