In reality, a winery is a large commercial building in the middle of a rural landscape. Designing such a building to be fit for purpose and respond sensitively to its surroundings could be construed as a challenge.

Architect Charlie Notts was involved in the development of plans for the Yealands Estate winery building.

"The building is both functional for its purpose of winemaking and exciting in its point of difference, reflecting and responding to the surrounding rolling, hilled landscape," he says.

Owner Peter Yealands wanted to achieve green certification for his winery through the New Zealand Green Star rating system, so he worked with project leader Apollo Projects to select the best possible materials.

Front and rear facades are finished in Kingspan's Architectural Wall Panel Micro Rib Profile. A fully secret, fixed system for panel joints, which requires no face fixings or flashings to hide fixings, provides a clean, minimalist finish.
