Train of thought
With open space at a premium, the under-grounding of the West Kowloon Terminus has provided the people of Hong Kong with three additional hectares of recreational land
Traditionally, mass transit hubs are designed to facilitate the movement of large numbers of people in the shortest amount of time. Given Hong Kong has the fourth highest population density in the world, it is surprising that the West Kowloon Terminus for the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link has been designed to encourage commuters and visitors to take the time to soak in the surroundings.
As the gateway to Hong Kong, it was considered vital to connect the station with the surrounding urban context and make one aware that whether arriving or departing, you are in Hong Kong, says designer and Aedas executive director Andrew Bromberg.
"In order to do this, a 45m-high volume has been created which focuses attention toward views of the Hong Kong skyline and Victoria Peak beyond. The organisation of the design was inspired by converging forces all oriented toward the city, likened to the converging tracks coming into the terminus station itself."
A large civic square will be located on the western side of the terminus, with visitors being encouraged to walk across the roof to a viewing platform overlooking Victoria Harbour towards the city.
