Anyone who says design is all about good looks probably wasn't talking about kitchens. To make the most of this functional heart of your home, your kitchen should be designed to suit your individual needs and solidly manufactured to stand up to wear and tear.

Specialising in one-off designs, Scullery & Holz liaises closely with clients every step of the way to ensure final expectations for their kitchens are met, says managing director Stefan Mayer.

"For this kitchen, the clients wanted a solid workspace with plenty of display shelving, a classic look and a separate area for younger family members to prepare snacks," says Mayer.

The kitchen features honed marble surfaces on the splashback, oven alcove and countertops. Customised, hand-painted cabinetry is solidly constructed with framed doors and butt hinges.

"A separate food prep centre for the children is concealed behind stainless mesh bifold doors on one end wall," he says. "Accessories from a microwaveto waffle irons are kept here, leaving the central area free for adults. The mesh doors provide ventilation for the microwave."

Backlit niche shelving provides display space for a plate collection, while the overall cabinetry design emphasises ample storage within easy reach ofthe cooking areas.
