Finding the best style for a new kitchen involves much more than simple, practical considerations. The new design must also fit into the rest of the house, matching or reflecting other furnishings and finishes.

When Andrew Dee of Wonderful Kitchens was asked to design a new kitchen for a home in the upmarket Sydney suburb of Vaucluse, he concluded that a handpainted French Provincial finish would create the right aesthetic.

"The whole house has a luxurious look and an unmistakable feeling of elegance, so we needed a kitchen that reflected this," he says.

Dee chose a traditonal raised panel style, hand-painted in white for the doors and drawers, and teamed it with Calacutta Oro on the perimeter and island benchtops and the splashbacks.

The design of the kitchen centres on a custom-built cooking section framed by a mantel and wide columns, with extra storage provided in roller shutter appliance cabinets tucked in behind the columns on each side.

To mark the transition between the kitchen and eating area, display cabinets were built into the ends of the cabinetry facing the dining table.

Subtle details such as Victorian-style kickboards, dentille moulding, fluted columns and decorative corbels are part of the French Provincial style, while modern hardware and fittings ensure the kitchen is functional and practical to use.

Wonderful Kitchens has designed, manufactured and installed kitchens, laundries, vanities and wardrobes into the home of its clients for more than 30 years.
