Design trends are not only evident in contemporary urban interiors they can also be seen in many modern and remodeled country residences, as this project illustrates.Kitchen designer Mal Corboy CKD says the kitchen needed to reflect the contemporary look of the rest of the house. But at the same time, it was important to acknowledge the rural setting."The selection of Corian® countertops in Fossil was the starting point," Corboy says. "The flecked, gravelly look of the surfaces is reminiscent of the surrounding landscape. The color of the countertops also influenced the choice of the glossy sand-colored laminate and lacquered mocha cabinets."Corboy says the stepped island countertops, and the use of two different thicknesses is a design trend increasingly seen in contemporary kitchens."Incorporating a chunky, cantilevered countertop on this island provides a more social seating area for family and friends. It also meant we could have full-width drawers on both sides of the island at the other end, where the cabinetry features negative detailing." Corboy says he frequently specifies Corian surfaces for a variety of reasons."I like both the look and feel of the product," he says. "The extensive color range is also a major advantage."But equally importantly, Corian allows me to be very creative. It can be shaped to accommodate any design, and is easily cantilevered, as in this kitchen. It also creates a seamless surface, and sinks can be integrated into the countertops a feature I often incorporate in my kitchen designs."DuPont¢ Surfaces marketing manager Maureen McGeehan says the ability to customize Corian is one of its key features."It enables designers and homeowners to think outside the box and use the surface in innovative ways," she says. Corian is non-porous and does not promote the growth of mold, mildew or bacteria. It is also renewable stains and scratches can be sanded out to keep the surface looking like new."Corian is not limited to kitchens it can be used in various applications throughout the home. These can include vanity tops, tub surrounds, shower walls, desk tops and shelving. For more details, phone 800 4 Corian (426 7426).
