Broad floor plates, voids with inter-level staircases and issues of security were all important considerations on the 18 Marcus Clarke project. Integrated engineering and services provider Thiess undertook the construction project, and delivered a showcase contemporary architectural building.

The 16-level building was constructed using a conventional reinforced concrete core formed using a jumpform system plus reinforced concrete beams and post-tensioned slabs on metal sheeting.

To optimise production on 18 Marcus Clarke's expansive 2350m² floor plates, Thiess used a tableform formwork system and two formwork hoists.

The complexity of creating such large floors was compounded by the voids punched through the floors to accommodate the inter-level staircases. Typically, a floor was completed in a nine-day cycle.

As well as managing the design and construction of the base building, Thiess carried out the integrated fit-out for DAFF, the sole tenant. Being able to configure DAFF's specific needs for lighting, cabling, air conditioning, and extensive security as construction progressed saved numerous work hours and material resources. The integrated fit-out meant no elements had to be removed or reconfigured after construction to accommodate the department's individual requirements.
