2018 TIDA New Zealand Architect-designed Suite Winner – SGA
Designer: Roy Tebbutt of Strachan Group Architects.
Architect Statement:
Located at Castor Bay on Auckland’s North Shore, the dark box like forms of Bay House stretch and weave along the elevated south-facing site. Recessed into the bank, the concrete basement is fractured by a glass roofed atrium space that allows sun and natural light to permeate deep within the building footprint.
Master Suite Design Upper Level:
- The master ‘retreat’ is located on the highest level of Bay House which benefits from layered views over Castor Bay, Milford Beach, and Auckland city beyond. The layout of the bathroom allows the hypnotic view to also be enjoyed from the vanity and shower
- The master suite responds to the client brief by providing highly integrated design which transitions seamlessly between bedroom, ensuite and wardrobe through the the use of a refined material palette and cabinetry detailing
- The matte black porcelain floor and double shower box contrast the texture and warmth of the birch cabinetry and plywood linings
- The master ensuite and wardrobe were designed with a lower stud height as a ‘furniture-like’ component contained within the space. This allows northern light to stream-in through the clerestory windows servicing all areas within the master suite
- The ensuite ‘shower box’ cantilevers over the northern patio contributing to the stepped façade and (northern) exterior composition.
