The marble flows over the top and down three sides of the kitchen island, so it looks as if it has been honed from a single block of stone. The same marble features on the backsplash behind the oven and cooktop, tying the design together. The rest of the home is more traditional, which influenced the design of the cabinetry. Aesthetics and performance go hand in hand to create award-winning kitchens. And there has never been a more definitive example of this than the kitchen featured on these pages.Designed by Robyn Labb of Robyn Labb Kitchens, the kitchen has won first prize in the Fisher & Paykel Australia Design Awards 2011/2012. Fisher & Paykel brand manager Kara Phillips says the judging panel was particularly impressed with the way Fisher & Paykel appliances created a highly co-ordinated look."The choice of appliances ensures this kitchen is ideal for entertaining and everyday catering to the family," Phillips says. "Equipping the scullery with additional appliances, storage and cleanup facilities makes the kitchen highly functional. The judges also said the restrained classic palette has been used to great effect, and they loved the way the kitchen has been opened up with a seamless flow to the outdoors."
