Grand architectural themes with strong design elements can create dynamic interiors. However, although breathtaking on first view, these expansive living areas can also be intimidating for those seeking to create a family home.

Mindful of the Hamlet Estates' creative legacy, interior architect Deborah Verderame Marciano designed the interior of two model homes with a warm and inviting ambiance in keeping with the period style.

"As the elevations of the houses create large ceilings and spacious living areas, I needed to bring the interior scheme into a more human scale without losing any of the expansive appeal."

The house models she designed interiors for were named after two of Frank Lloyd Wright's most iconic homes Fallingwater and Biltmore. Working from a prescribed layout, Verderame Marciano introduced many subtle interior elements in keeping with Wright's architectural vision.

"Although the houses are designed in a period style, as model homes they also have to appeal to a large, contemporary audience," she says.

Inside the Fallingwater model the living area opens onto the dining room. However, the former is two-stories high, while the latter is only one story. In living spaces with 21ft ceilings the walls are painted in a dark color at the base that slowly lightens as the wall reaches a full height. Verderame Marciano says this has the visual effect of making the living space appear less imposing and more in keeping with other areas in the home.

The fireplace, made from marble tiles and wood details, echoes the geometric appeal of the exterior facade. Verderame Marciano says this introduces another strong element into the room, so that the focus isn't solely upon the tall, linear windows.

The Biltmore's living room fireplace also plays a significant role in the overall scheme. Its floor-to-ceiling surround is made from the same horizontal cut stone as is used on the home's exterior facade.
