While there is plenty of nostalgia associated with holiday homes that have been in a family for generations, there comes a time when they no longer meet the needs of a modern lifestyle.

Such was the case with the original house that stood on this site in the leafy beachside suburb of Bateau Bay on the Central Coast. The owners consequently contracted Rustic Touch to design and build a new, environmentally friendly house that would suit the needs of a growing family.

Rustic Touch director Debra Turner says the house also had to be light and sunny in winter, and the kitchen needed to suit the professional chef in the family.

To achieve these aims, Rustic Touch designed a house with a spilt skillion roof and large eaves that allow the sun to penetrate in winter but keep it at bay in summer. Wherever possible, materials from the original house were recycled.

"We recycled the Zincalume roofing, which was reused as external cladding in key areas, and in the front fence," says Turner. "Also, the original hardwood was recycled for external sunshade battens. These match a new hardwood deck on the north side of the house, and structural hardwood posts at the front and rear."

A new Zincalume water tank creates a bold, contemporary accent at the entry. Stored water is used for garden irrigation.

Inside, raked ceilings create a light, spacious family living area, where a sleek, modern kitchen takes centre stage.
