The innovation that defines every aspect of the Westpac head office is matched by the high quality of the construction and fit-out. Astor Construction was commissioned by the main contractor, Hawkins Construction, to carry out the base build, and the construction of a curved timber feature wall.

Astor Construction managing director Grant Rowell says the company, which has had a close association with Hawkins Construction since 1991, undertook the exterior and interior carpentry. This included all the timber framing.

Astor Construction also built the distinctive curved feature wall that separates client meeting areas. The wall has a steel and timber framework overlaid with precision router-cut customwood panels punctuated with small windows.

Grant Rowell says Astor Construction has worked with other major construction companies over the past two decades, including Fletcher Construction, Mainzeal, Multiplex, Watts & Hughes and Haydn & Rollett most recently on the Carlaw Park development.

"Over the years, Astor Construction has gained a reputation for its strong and knowledgeable workforce," he says. "Much of the company's success can be put down to its ability to recognise challenges and produce solutions. We can take a concept and make it work. In fact, we thrive on difficult projects, such as the large timber-clad bowl-shaped auditorium in the Auckland Museum."

Other high-profile projects undertaken by Astor Construction include the Sky City Hotel, Auckland Hospital, Middlemore Hospital and the Auckland Women's Prison.
