A room with a view that's an apt description of the lifts installed in the new Westpac head office building. Schindler Lifts NZ was contracted to provide lifts with glass backs that would maximise the view through the glazed curtain wall of the building.

The company supplied four Schindler 5400 lifts with full rear glass walls that also wrap around 500mm of the side walls. These custom-made passenger lifts are made from high-tech prefabricated components, and do not require a machine room. They also have smaller pit and headroom dimensions than a standard lift.

As well as three dedicated passenger lifts, there is a passenger-goods lift that serves some specific floors that the passenger lifts don't access, notably the plant room and loading dock.

With the need for tight security, the lifts are fitted with the Schindler Miconic 10 security access control system. This system features software that can assign lifts to specific users. Trade and delivery personnel are automatically assigned the goods lift.

In addition, disabled persons can be recognised when an access card is swiped, so the system can assign them a special type of service depending on their disability. For example, a person in a wheelchair will be assigned a lift with fewer passengers to allow more room to manoeuvre the chair.
