Colourful paving solutions for university project

Natural stone is a distinctive feature of the podium and landscaped areas surrounding the new Jane Foss Russell Building at the University of Sydney. Differing shades of granite supplied and installed by Sam the Paving Man provide visual impact and define specific structural elements.
Sam the Paving Man manager Eugene Dore says the company's Samstone Sesame Grey granite with a flamed finish was chosen for the large paved areas on the podium, walkways and balconies. Outdoor seats feature the same granite with a honed finish.
The Sesame Grey granite is paired with Samstone Jarrah granite cobbles in a mix of three finishes flamed, natural and bush-hammered.

"Each finish provides a different colour and surface texture," says Dore. "Mixing the three textures provides a more interesting, decorative paving effect."
The Jarrah granite cobblestones create a large X shape on the podium, and also feature on a 10m-high raked wall. In addition, the Jarrah granite provides a distinctive contrast on the stairs where it is used as a nosing strip against the Sesame Grey tread. This allows for the 30% contrast required by the BCA. Dore says this product is manufactured exclusively for Sam the Paving Man.
Further custom-manufactured items for this project include tactile paving for the visually impaired in both Sesame Grey granite and Jarrah granite.

Sam the Paving Man specialises in the importation, supply and installation of granite pavers. In addition to large commercial paving projects, the company frequently creates customised outdoor granite seating, water features, individual nosing strips and granite block stairs, and a variety of kerbing units can also be made to order.
Other major projects undertaken by the company include 250,000m² of paving at Sydney Olympic Park, Homebush Bay, Darling Harbour and Rouse Hill Shopping Village.
