Strong standing aluminium louvres a key feature of Blum offices

Large painted aluminium louvres are an architectural feature of the new Blum headquarters at both the front and back. They also have a key practical role to play, screening the sun in the early morning and late afternoon.

The louvres were custom fabricated from 6mm aluminium sheet on 75mm x 75mm aluminium RHS frames by metalwork specialist Ashworth & Taylor. Director Bruce Taylor says the sheer size and weight of the louvres, particularly those at the rear of the building, which weighed 250kg, added to the logistical challenge of the in situ installation by the company. "With roof overhangs and other constrictions at the rear, it was a precision job to lift the louvres into position and bolt them in place."

Ashworth & Taylor also manufactured the T316-grade stainless steel handrails for the balustrading inside and outside the building, and made the galvanised steel stanchions for the exterior stairs.

Taylor says the company has worked on numerous large projects and developments throughout the Auckland region, together with a number of building contractors. Recent projects include the perforated aluminium facade on the front of the Audi Terminal building and the facade on the Laminex building in Penrose.

"We also undertake a lot of civil work, and have worked on bridges on State Highway 21 through Mt Roskill and Tristram Ave."
