Modernising a traditional design is one way of solving the problem of blending in and allows a contemporary aesthetic to connect with a long-established neighbourhood.

Such was the strategy with this new house designed and built by Canny, says principal Damian Canny.

"With a home located in a street of mostly traditionally styled houses, the owners wanted to make a statement, but did not want to look like the odd one out. Canny updated classic design forms to devise a house that is recognisable yet distinctive. Colour and material choice further complement the streetscape."

The theme and style established at the front gate is carried throughout the house to create a contemporary, relaxed atmosphere, with an emphasis on spaces with individual design integrity contributing to the whole.

"This home's carefully considered design and attention to detail is testament to the level of proficiency Canny puts into each project," says Canny. "Instead of designing by moving rooms around on a template, our team of designers produces spaces that interact with their surroundings each leading into the next to form cleverly composed connections that come together as a liveable, customised house."

In the case of the featured house, these spaces include a mix of formal and informal living, both indoors and out. A courtyard space with a water feature has been situated midway along the house. This brings ample natural light into the home, and is a pleasure to eye and ear alike all Canny hallmarks, says Canny.
