The living area opens to an outdoor entertaining area. Only a few years ago, we could get away with hiding our kitchens behind walls and doors. Now our kitchens are as much front of house as our dining table and chairs or our entrance hall. The architect of this Scott Salisbury showhome, the Georgia, has positioned the kitchen as a focal point in the open-plan living and dining area. Its simple door style and horizontal handles suggest a contemporary kitchen, while the extensive use of timber and the symmetry bring to mind a more transitional look. A limited material palette of timber, glass and stainless steel complements the understated lines of the cabinetry. To maintain the furniture-like feel of the kitchen, several of the Smeg appliances are fully integrated into the cabinetry, says Omega Smeg's product and promotions co-ordinator Tony Lee. The twin-motor rangehood is also integrated into the cabinetry, and its pull-out stainless steel fascia rail has been replaced by timber detailing. The appliances were also selected for their functionality, says Lee.The 70cm oven has the capacity of a 90cm oven its ceramic insulation allows it to be positioned alongside cabinetry without any gaps and its door is triple glazed, so that it is cool to the touch. The 70cm gas stainless steel cooktop has an ultra-rapid wok burner in the centre that can be isolated for super-low heat. "The gas stainless steel cooktop includes a dual control burner, designed for high-speed wok, boiling and griddle cooking. The small inner burner has a separate control for the lowest of controllable heat. This ability is generally denied to the chef who wants a very low simmer for a casserole, soup or to melt butter or chocolate. Think of all the delicate sauces that you can now replicate in your own kitchen."For details, contact Omega Smeg, 2 Baker St, Botany, NSW 2019, phone (02) 9384 5678, fax (02) 9666 3025.
