A strong, L-shaped design with black cabinetry and brass accents celebrates form and connects with the home's wider contemporary aesthetic

Designed by Davinia Sutton, Detail by Davinia Sutton

From the designer:

Our homeowners envisioned a kitchen space that respected their architecturally designed, modern family home.

They desired a functional, uncluttered kitchen which stayed true to the boldness of the striking modern architecture and cityscape views beyond.

The kitchen is located to the side of an open-plan living and dining zone. Taking advantage of this spatial placement, the kitchen design is set out in an ‘L’ shape galley format.

A restricted palette of ¼ cut American white oak veneer with a matt blended finish and textured matt black lacquer joinery fronts provides a sense of boldness to the main kitchen design. This also draws the kitchen into its surroundings.

Textured matt granite was selected to be a practical work-top surface as well as complement the joinery palette.

Attention to detail can be seen in the negative detail clad in aged living brass finish, along with the play on form with the custom-made pendant light designed in a tube format. A brass finish plays on the juxtaposition of lightness and strong structural form.

Rebated strip lighting has been introduced to the open steel box display unit, to enhance the element of light and ‘pop’ the personal items on display and highlight their story.

The result is a design that incorporates the use of colour, light and texture to enhance the space and modern form – a kitchen that uses strong structural forms to complement the modern architectural context in this family home.
