Masonry-built homes offer several lifestyle advantages for their owners. However, it takes a designer specialising in masonry architecture to maximise their potential benefits.

Barry Northcott of Dimension Design has been designing masonry homes for over 12 years. He says the key to success is a close liaison between himself and the client throughout the design process.

"The clients on this project requested a large, open living space suited to entertaining and family living," he says. "They also wanted a private master bedroom and a separate area for the daughter's bedroom, her own lounge, and a guest bedroom."

The three-level house is built entirely from concrete, with wide-span concrete mid floors. These accommodated the large, unbroken family living space and allowed Dimension Design to create a bridge spanning a dramatic double-height space at the home's entrance. This bridge provides a degree of separation between daughter and parents.

Other features include broad overhangs creating sheltered outdoor living areas and double garaging on the lower level of the stepped-down property.
