This web-like structure provides visual interest and privacy
A lattice-like architectural structure, featuring a series of angular shards, spans three separate atrium voids in the Axa Centre.
The lightweight structure comprises a custom designed frame of extruded powdercoated aluminium that houses data cables and lighting systems. Angular shards manufactured from Barrisol complete the system and create a degree of privacy and overhead protection for the teams working on the ground-floor levels of the atria.
Industrial design company Diadem started with sketch concepts by project architect Hassell. The team's challenge was to design a system with no visible fixings that could be manufactured and installed with a minimum of structural support, while meeting engineering and electrical specifications. To install the structure, material had to be cut into 2.8m lengths to fit into the Axa Centre's goods lift, and then reassembled on site.
The company also produced 4m x 4m illuminated signage for the building entrance. The signage, based on a concept by Cornwell Design, was highly visible as it extended from the first to the second storey of the building. This required a high level of design detailing and a solution that integrated with the surrounding perforated metal panels.
