As an environment for relaxing and entertaining, few places are as welcoming as the kitchen. The owners of this minimalist kitchen took the concept a stage further, with a kitchen island that functions as an informal bar as well as a place to prepare and eat food.

The homeowners both like to entertain and they wanted a kitchen that would complement their lifestyle and their stunning new home, says designer Brian Patterson of Nouvelle Designer Kitchens.

"They particularly wanted a bar fridge, so rather than hiding it away, we decided to make it a key feature of the design."

The result, he says, is a winning design: in 2006, the kitchen won best kitchen designed to a modern theme' in the HIA 2006 NSW awards. The clean lines fit well with the rest of the home, with an A-frame roofline and dramatic bush views providing an interesting canvas to work with.

Benchtops were positioned so that the owners have a clear view of the bush and family and guests have plenty of space to congregate around the bar area.

Once the designer had established a monochrome look for the cabinetry with high-gloss polyurethane finishes, the bar stools and timber flooring were added for warmth and interest.

"Red was chosen for the bar stools and a richly coloured timber for the floor to tone down the dominant black and white colour scheme and add an interesting contrast," says Patterson.

The handle-less cabinetry, with its grip-style method of opening, gives a smooth finish. It's also a way of keeping appliances and kitchenware out of reach of children.

A television fits into stainless steel cabinetry, so it is hidden away when not in use. It can be pulled out when needed and viewed from the island or the ottomans.
