In today's busy, modern world, we are always looking for ways to fine-tune routines to maximise our time. With a substantial part of family life focused in or around the kitchen, streamlining our time spent there is a good place to start.

Blum's new concept of Dynamic Space was developed to save you the hundreds of wasted hours often spent bending or stretching for goods, and walking back and forth across the floor to retrieve items, says managing director of Blum Australia Brett Ambrose.

"The Dynamic Space concept introduces a number of energy-saving ideas to the kitchen, with a central focus on zoning and placing storage facilities according to their ease of use."

Dynamic Space involves planning a cabinetry layout around five activity zones storage of consumables, storage of non-consumables, a cleaning zone, a preparation zone and a cooking zone.

A Dynamic Space booklet offers an assessment of these zones, showing the right layout for them in terms of accessibility and frequency of use, says Ambrose.

"From here, Blum's zone planner suggests suitable dividing systems, pull-outs and drawers to create labour-efficient and comfortable options for each individual zone," he says. "It makes sense, for example, to have a series of drawers that are tailor-made for utensils, cooking oils and pots and pans beneath a cooktop."

Ergonomics are central to all aspects of these storage solutions. The Dynamic Space booklet also provides advice about how to effectively place different types of storage, so that you don't need to stretch and bend.

"To illustrate this, Blum base units don't have doors and shelving, but generally feature pull-outs instead," says Ambrose. "This avoids the need to bend down and gives you an overview of contents, with everything in easy reach. The company's drawers are built as full extensions for a similar reason, so you can easily see and access contents at the back of the drawers without stooping."
