Innovation is vital in today's competitive industry and it was innovation that led to significant savings in the construction of the Westfield Riccarton car park.

Clearwater Construction was contracted to provide a design-and-build parking solution at the Riccarton site and along with sister companies, DHC Consulting and D&H Steel Construction, completed the project on time, with substantial fiscal savings for the client.

The three companies were key players in the construction of this multi-level, 1000-vehicle car park," says Clearwater's general manager Martin Fahey.

"DHC provided the structural design, D&H detailed, fabricated and erected 1000 tonnes of structural steel, while Clearwater managed the process from start to finish," says Martin. "The integration of the design, fabrication and construction within the group allowed for innovation throughout the process, including the complete control of all timelines."

"The sister company association is generally conducted at arm's length. However, when we are able to manage a complete project for a client, the relationship also provides savings on supervision and coordination costs, particularly on structural packages."

At Riccarton the complex ground conditions proved challenging for the design team, with the eventual solution including a mix of bored piles and inclined screw piles to take the K-braced steel frame. Delays in the ground put pressure on the construction programme but with complete design control and the ability to erect the superstructure quickly, Clearwater was able to deliver the project on time.

The completed car park includes 2100m³ of concrete, 160 piles, 1000 tonnes of structural steel and 800 panels and was handed over on 23 December 2008, as planned.

Established in 1984, Clearwater's reputation is based on a high level of expertise originating from its strong engineering roots. Martin says that being able to provide engineered solutions as part of the structural package through the use of D&H and DHC is a point of difference and a benefit to any client.

"Clearwater develops subcontractor loyalty through close and valuable working relationships," says Martin. "The quality of the Christchurch-based specialist contractors was instrumental to the success of this project the reliable delivery of these subcontracted works ensured tight deadlines were met and high standards maintained."

"The present complex economic situation will see Clearwater focusing on innovation, providing value to our clients and using the combined strengths of our in-house expertise."
