Southern inspiration

The beauty of the Central Otago landscape and rural homesteads inspired the selection of Kiwi Schist for this new home

Security and permanence these are the qualities more and more homeowners are looking for today when they plan their new home. So it's not surprising the solid stone houses of Central Otago exert a strong pull.

The owners of this Kumeu residence, built by BS Godfrey Builders, were inspired by the landscape and homesteads of the southern region. They subsequently looked for a way to incorporate elements of that look into their own home.

The solution was to use accents of Kiwi Schist from Stutex Stone's Cerastone range. This manufactured schist complements the plaster and cedar exterior, and helps achieve a traditional-style home that has that sense of solidity.

The owners say the stone provides a strong visual impact without the large cost outlay normally associated with the use of natural stone. As the stone is one third the weight of real stone, it also enables considerable design flexibility. For example, the stone can be used on second storeys where weight is an issue.

More than 20 textured designs are available from Stutex Stone, ranging from schist looks to river rocks, mountain and drift stones. The company says all of these products can be installed quickly and easily over a weathertight exterior or interior substrate.
