The owners of this property wanted their new home to provide a cozy and fun atmosphere – both for the couple themselves and for large group gatherings.
A northern outlook towards a stream on the boundary proved to be the key feature of the site, and so drove the design of the house.
Lineal concrete forms staggered along the site allow for large openings that maximise sun and views throughout the day.
Hovering above these forms is an impressive, undulating copper roof – rising from the ground at the entry in the West and stretching over the living spaces to encapsulate the first floor sleeping quarters in the East.
The roof's copper form is extruded front to back, exposing an undercroft of rich timber in the vaulted ceilings throughout the interiors.
The TIDA judges were immediately impressed by the distinctive sculptural qualities of the roof, but also by the way its design manages solar gain while giving occupants views of surrounding tree canopies.
