From the bleachers and columns to the post-tensioned raking beams, as super-subcontractor on the Eden Park project, Dominion Constructors was responsible for key concrete works

Looking up at the Eden Park stands from below, the sheer enormity of the concrete works is readily apparent. Not so visible is the organisation that went on behind the scenes to ensure concrete was poured, precast elements built and deadlines met, says the company responsible for the majority of the concrete work.

Auckland-based Dominion Constructors was the super-subcontractor hired by Fletcher to undertake the concrete work on the South and East Stands. Project manager Paul Warrener says Dominion poured in situ concrete for the seating on the lower bowls and all columns. The company also poured self-compacting concrete in situ for the post-tensioned raking beams that support the bleachers on the upper level.

"One of the most challenging aspects was the fact that we had to work at a great height," Warrener says. "In some areas, for example, there is no second level, but a huge void between the lower level and level 3, which meant we were constructing columns up to 6.5m high."

Dominion Constructors was also responsible for the construction and propping of all the formwork and for the placement of the precast concrete elements. These included bleachers on the upper levels, wall panels, Dycore slabs and TT slabs.

"The huge volume of concrete required meant we were pouring concrete every day and simultaneously working in many different areas," says Warrener. "To keep track of the works we had six supervisors on site, who constantly monitored progress. We also held regular meetings and walk-arounds with Fletcher personnel to work out a plan of attack for the week ahead."

Warrener says as well as ensuring deadlines were met, the company was focussed on quality control. "The concrete is permanently on show so the quality of finish was paramount."
