Smooth passage - Art gallery flooring reflects expertise of four firms
Art gallery flooring reflects expertise of four firms
The art may be centre stage at the Auckland Art Gallery, but it requires an appropriate setting. Not surprisingly, the flooring plays a critical role in creating the ideal viewing space both aesthetically and practically.
Wallace Construction contracted specialist flooring company Just Hardwood Floors to supply and install a timber floor that would have the aesthetics and durability required for the high-circulation areas. It was important that the flooring did not detract from the art works on display.
Just Hardwood Floors sourced an extra high-grade solid American white oak tongue-and-groove flooring from Herman Pacific. Steve Carter of Herman Pacific says the architects specifically wanted the timber to be the highest grade imported to New Zealand.
"With this in mind, we contacted our American mill, ITL, to select the best timber available. Each piece was regraded three times at Herman Pacific during the production process."
Steve Heald of Just Hardwood Floors says the boards were affixed to the subfloor using the Liquid Nails Direct Stick flooring adhesive supplied by Selleys NZ. "Just Hardwood Floors has a long association with Selleys and this adhesive, and can attest to its reliability and performance."
Once laid, the boards were sanded to a fine finish, followed with application of one coat of Bona Prime Intense and two coats of Bona Traffic Matt commercial-grade polyurethane. The products were supplied by Flooring Wholesale/Look Floors.
"These products were chosen because they are highly durable and environmentally friendly," says Heald. "The ECI-rated polyurethane has a low-sheen finish that makes it well suited to the gallery environment."
