With its wide colonnade, town-square landscaping and visually integrated apartment buildings, the new Metlifecare retirement village designed by Klein has a European hilltown ambience
Designing a luxury retirement village on a greenfield site provides a rare and ideal opportunity to create a cohesive, integrated and resident-focused living environment.
Klein Ltd, the architectural firm responsible for the design of the new Metlifecare village in Takapuna, The Poynton, already had a head start on this project the company has worked with Metlifecare on many projects, for more than 10 years.
Klein managing director Steven Hill and senior associate Shaun Thompson say a landscaped town square is the central focus of the new village. Apartment buildings are arranged around the square and linked by a wide colonnade, which unifies the village by providing a sheltered edge for a wide variety of activities centred on the square.
Precast concrete walls and a modular design system were developed to maximise cost benefits. Maintenance costs were reduced by the use of natural stone, Keim mineral silicate paint and ColorSteel.
Steven Hill says a collaborative design process ensured programme demands were achieved. Working closely with Metlifecare and the main contractor Haydn & Rollett through all stages resulted in efficient, well-co-ordinated documentation a process Klein is renowned for.
"Strong communication and a site observation role also allowed Klein to assist Haydn & Rollett in delivering a well-finished, high-quality development."
