Silver lining new bathroom by Handman Associates
Marble-lined bathroom by Shelly Handman
A remodeled master suite is perhaps the best way to give yourself a lift in the morning a beautiful bedroom and bathroom can make the spirits soar.
This suite was completely transformed by interior designer Shelly Handman, who says the woman owner did not want a hard-edged contemporary look, and was not particularly interested in antiques.
"It needed to be a very soft environment that would be easy to live in," Handman says. "The house sits within a beautiful wooded lot beside a picturesque lake. The suite needed to be serene, to echo this quiet, peaceful setting."

To this end, the walls in the bedroom, and some walls in the bathroom, feature textural grasscloth in a soft seafoam green that picks up the color of the veining in the Calacatta Gold marble that lines the bathroom.
The other bedroom furnishings reinforce the warm neutral tones, with darker wood accents and silver leaf trim on the night stands. A TV cabinet has a mirrored trompe l'oeil effect on the doors, and a television that can be raised automatically and swiveled so it can be viewed from the bed or a sofa on the opposite wall.
In the bathroom Calacatta Gold marble slabs feature on the tub deck, vanity tops and waterfall sides, while the walls around the bathing areas are tiled. The vanities feature high-gloss Macassar ebony wood.
"This was chosen for its French Deco look," says Handman. "It enhances the elegant feel, but is not foreboding. In fact the entire bathroom feels light and airy, thanks in part to the natural light from the skylight."
To disguise the small scale of a high window, Handman specified large white shutters that give the impression of a much larger window.
