Space is often considered the ultimate luxury for homes today. But even a large space can present a challenge for designers who wish to make a kitchen as functional as possible.

For this kitchen, designer Angus Smith of Supreme Joinery had to provide two food preparation areas so more than one person could work at one time.

"The clients also wanted an attractive kitchen that would be easy to work in," he says. "Plenty of bench space and storage were other essential elements."

To contain the work triangle within the overall space, Smith positioned the main sink on a large granite-topped island. Both the cooktop and refrigerator are within easy reach. The island also provides storage and casual seating for family and friends at a safe distance from the food preparation area.

A second sink is positioned on a long jarrah bench at the side.

Tall, glass-fronted display units were designed to display the owners' glassware collection, and are accessible from two sides. Glass-fronted units also feature on the opposite wall and the island.
