For an architectural and engineering company there can be no greater showcase of its skills than a fit-out of the firm's own premises. Besides creating an efficient working layout and dramatic aesthetic presence, it brings the opportunity to demonstrate particular company strengths such as an emphasis on sustainability and energy-efficient design.Recently, Stephenson & Turner relocated its Auckland team of architects and engineers to new premises. A primary objective was to create an open, welcoming environment for S&T's clients enabling them to feel part of the team. This was also a chance to create an inspirational work environment for staff and introduce a raft of sustainable energy measures into the new offices, a focus of S&T in all of its projects. The S&T fit-out responded directly to the base building at the new location, Grant Thornton House, which has floor-to-ceiling windows and a generous 1500m² floor plate. At one end of the reception area, an opaque glass screen emblazoned with the S&T logo offers a subtle degree of separation between reception and offices. At the other, a translucent box in white laminate panels provides a design feature and a private meeting room. The working area is open plan, apart from six semi-enclosed directors' offices. These are designed to let light pass through them from external windows into the interior spaces. The fit-out's eco-friendly initiatives include a VRV heat recovery system for air conditioning, CO2 monitoring and control, a stand-alone AC in the server room, daylight sensors and motion sensors switching lights on and off in areas of intermittent use, and efficient water use with pressure-reducing valves.
