Sharp contrasts

When the view is impressive, a simple palette of colors and materials that doesn't draw the attention away from the outlook is often seen as the best solution.

Architect Lindy Leuschke of Leuschke Group Architects resisted the temptation to take the neutral path in the interior design of this bathroom, in a home perched on a high cliff, looking out across the harbor.

Instead, a glass mosaic tiled wall behind the bath gives a strong shot of color that contrasts sharply with the glossy, black floor tiles and fresh, white wall tiles. The effect is then duplicated by a full-height mirror on the wall behind the vanity.

"In comparison with the rich purple, blue and gray tones of the mosaic tiles, the vanity is simply constructed from a sheet of glass that has been hung across the width of the wall. Stainless steel was then chosen for handbasins and faucets as well as for the towel rail below the top," says Leuschke.

To take advantage of the views, the large shower looks out through a full-length window on the opposite wall. Outside, a boundary wall was extended to provide privacy. Small clerestory windows line two sides of the bathroom, ensuring the room is always light, sunny and private.

Storage is provided by a full-length cupboard that is concealed behind a sliding glass door on the wall beside the vanity.

The large bathroom is part of a master suite, which occupies the entire top level of the house.

In the bedroom, floor-to-ceiling windows help maximize the view. In contrast to the dark carpet, white walls and furnishings allow the view to be the main decorative feature.

"The whole home is large and luxurious, so the master bedroom and bathroom are designed on the same scale. Homeowners are increasingly wanting their bedrooms to be more than just a utilitarian space," Leuschke says.
