The humble blind has come a long way in its evolutionary journey. Space-age fabrics and integrated technologies now mean blinds can actively reduce a building's heat load, contributing to an overall reduction of its carbon footprint.

For the recently completed NZI Centre, with its triple-glazed, twin-skin facade, an effective way to manage the heat load was essential.

New Zealand Window Shades has built a reputation of providing customised solutions for heat load management in commercial buildings using fully endorsed technologies and fabrics in all its commercial applications.

The company's continued focus on research and development helped secure the NZI Centre contract, for which New Zealand Window Shades supplied a series of automated Venetian blinds and rollershades.

Because the building's north and north-east facades utilise a twin-facade system, the blinds cannot be adjusted manually. The entire system is programmed with preset stops, sun tracking and scheduling all of which is operated by a fully automated control system.

Internal sunscreen rollershades made from Silverscreen fabric and fitted to all other perimeter windows are operated in a similar manner. These blinds have been overlapped to prevent light gaps, thereby eliminating heat spots and contributing to the mitigation of the building's heat load.
