Seamless integration
Want to maximise storage space and functionality while giving your new kitchen a distinctive look? This design by Michael Cooper Architects shows you how
Designed by Michael Cooper Architects
From the architect:
The owner wanted a modern open plan living and dining space that complemented and directed the attention to a high quality statement kitchen. Functionality of storage and aesthetic value were the top priorities.
Our interpretation of the brief resulted in an elegant kitchen that seamlessly integrated innovative technology with high quality materials.
The functionality and amount of storage space was paramount in the design. In order to maximise the available space, floor-to-ceiling cabinetry provided shelving units and drawers specifically designed for integrated appliances and dishes.
And to best utilise the floor-to-ceiling storage without compromising functionality, Blum servo-drive units were used in the overhead cabinetry to allow ease of access through light pressure or sensor activation.

Handleware powdercoated black matches the cabinetry colour, resulting in a seamless and refined look, and maintaining a modern look with clean and simple lines.
The combination of floor-to-ceiling cabinetry and camouflaged handles conceal the entrance door to the scullery, where there is further bench and storage space, complete with a Burns & Ferrall Panama sink, which is used as a herb garden and doubles as a champagne cooler.
The generous open plan living space allowed for an oversized island bench, which has further storage space for appliances on both faces, as well as sitting room for bar stools on the opposing side next to the dining space. Tongue and groove herringbone is used as a feature on the island front and was finished in a dark stain and clear lacquer to create a subtle and textural aesthetic.
The selection and placement of materials highlight specific design details whilst creating an overall luxurious and contemporary kitchen.
The dark stained oak cabinetry and Florim Matte black stone island benchtop and splashback provide a warm statement feature to highlight the kitchen and contrast the cool light grey honed and burnished concrete floor.
The backbench is a solid 6mm stainless steel sheet that wraps up the side cabinetry and above the overhead cabinets to create a central focal point in the kitchen. This is further highlighted by an 18mm negative detail.
This finishes off the cooking area and gives the backbench a strong presence in the kitchen whilst being an effective and innovative design detail.
Dark stained oak is strategically placed further throughout the house, such as in the adjacent living and dining room spaces, to create a seamless flow and an overall cohesive look.
Servo-drive technology was also used for the underbench bins to give hands-free, hygienic accessibility.
