Building information modelling (BIM) was a vital component of the Hamilton Island Yacht Club and Villas design. Project architect Adrian Esdaile of Walter Barda Design says the complexity of the building design meant 3D computer modelling was required every step of the way from the initial mass modelling right through to the detail documentation.

The company used Autodesk Revit Architecture software, which is purpose built for BIM.

"We have been using Autodesk computer modelling since 2004, so are very familiar with the company's software," says Esdaile. "We particularly appreciate the fact that Autodesk Revit is an all-in-one package that covers all stages of the design process."

Esdaile says the use of the Autodesk Revit software meant the project could be streamlinedtwo designers were able to handle the workload, despite the extensive number of detail drawings.

"There were more than 400 drawing sheets required for the product, and close to 600 different views of the building generated. Because of the complexity of the shapes, there were many sections and detail drawings to show how it all went together. The Autodesk Revit software allowed us to handle that amount of work with ease."

The team used the Autodesk Revit IFC Export program to transmit data to the structural steel manufacturer, who worked directly from the designs.

"We also found the program invaluable on site," says Esdaile. "Using a laptop computer with the Autodesk Revit software installed, we were able to use it to solve any problems as they occurred. Having a full digital model of the building on site meant the construction team could look at a 3D drawing while standing right next to the part of the building in question. We were able to show cutaway views of the different components, which helped them understand precisely how the building was constructed."

Autodesk Revit Architecture provides and presents every schedule, drawing sheet, 2D and 3D view from a single foundational database. This means changes are co-ordinated automatically across all facets and presentations as a project develops and evolves.

Autodesk AEC industry sales manager Rob Malkin says the software allows design professionals to better predict the outcome of a building before it is built.

"It helps architects create more sustainable, accurate designs with fewer errors and less waste, which leads to higher profits and more satisfied clients," he says. "Being able to simulate performance in the real world also provides a better understanding of cost, scheduling and environmental impact."
