With its distinctive nautical references, the design of the Hamilton Island Yacht Club building has much in common with yacht design, which is why the developers sought the services of a custom boat builder.

Azzura Marine, a company that specialises in custom boat design, construction and interior fit-outs, was contracted to provide many of the complex fixtures and fittings both inside and outside the building.

CEO David McQueen says Azzura Marine has a full understanding of the marine environment and the materials, finishes and construction techniques required to protect a building against the elements.

"We also have the ability to translate architectural drawings into a finished product that matches the architect's original vision," McQueen says. "For the yacht club project, we used 3D modelling software to create working drawings of the various complex mouldings. The fixtures and fittings were then built to Australian standards."

McQueen says Azzura Marine built all the custom glass-fibre guttering using moulded units.

"The guttering had to accommodate the three-dimensional shape of the building exterior, which is highly varied. It was also important that the finish of the guttering blend with the copper roofing. We provided a coloured gel coat to achieve this."

Azzura Marine also built the white fibreglass pelmets and ceiling linings, one of which punches through the building to the exterior.

McQueen says the company carried out much of the detailing in the building, including the nautical-style door handles and water catchment gutters.
