Room to move
To create an open-plan feel for this home, the dividing wall between the kitchen and family room was removed
Many people decide to renovate their kitchen once their children have moved out of the family home. It's a good time to re-evaluate how the kitchen is used, and design accordingly.
This was the case with this kitchen. Once children had married and left home, the homeowners decided that the kitchen needed to be significantly enlarged. Nouvelle Designer Kitchens was engaged to undertake the renovations.
"We enlarged the kitchen so it was more in proportion with the scale of the home. The design also needed to besympathetic to the home's traditional style," says designer Jan Mitchell.
Existing floor tiles were removed and a new timber floor laid to blend with the floor of the adjacent family room. Ceiling heights were also levelled between the two rooms.
Traditional white cabinetry with furniture-like details was chosen to match the rest of the home. The island has the character of a farmhouse table, and provides extra task bench space.
Functionality was also important to the homeowners. The new kitchen features modern appliances with efficient air extraction, discrete refrigeration, generous bench space, and easily accessible small appliances.
