It can be hard to improve on a building material that has been tried and tested over many years. In fact, the longer a material has been used, the better the endorsement.

Such is the case with Monier Centurion concrete roofing tiles. One of the oldest designs in the Monier collection, the Centurion has proven its durability over many decades, says CSR Monier's New Zealand roofing manager Marsden Griffiths.

"This tile has literally been a trooper," he says. "It has not only lasted the distance,it has also been the most popular concrete tile in our range. The fact that its profile doesn't dictate a particular look is one of its advantages it suits a wide variety of architectural styles."

But Griffiths says the demand for the Centurion has not meant the company ignores trends in the marketplace. With this in mind, CSR Monier recently introduced a new colour to the range.

"Char-grey provides a gradated tile, which merges tones of charcoal and grey," he says. "It has a random colour variation that imparts a lighter visual effect than a single-colour tile. This makes it particularly suitable in the contemporary home market."

Griffiths says the demand for Monier concrete tiles has increased significantly over recent years, in light of the problems with leaky buildings.

"We have noticed a return to established building materials, such as brick and tile. For most homeowners, their house is their largest financial investment, and, naturally, they want to protect it."

Monier concrete tiles come with a 50-year guarantee on the integrity of the tile, which guarantees against rot, rust and degradation. The tiles are also well suited to coastal locations.
