It had to happen. Just when you thought you were up-to-date with the latest kitchen technology, along comes a new innovation that makes you wonder why someone didn't think of it before.

In this instance, it's the microwave drawer concept pioneered by Sharp. The company has taken the microwave off the counter and placed it at the most convenient height for all the family.

The new Insight Pro¢ Microwave Drawer¢ collection includes a 24-inch model with front-mounted touch controls. The drawer, which opens with the touch of a button, can be installed in standard 24-inch base cabinets. There is also a 30-inch model featuring the same high performance and sleek appearance.

Sharp senior director of appliance marketing Christine Lewis says the accessibility of the drawers means there is no need to remove dishes from the oven to check or stir the food. It is also easy to keep the interior clean.

"Performance is another plus," she says. "New sensor technology ensures you will get perfect cooking results automatically. And the microwave is large enough to hold a 9 x 13-inch dish."

Both models can be installed under a counter, making them ideal for islands and open-plan areas.

The Insight Pro Cooktop+Microwave Drawer combination is another new cooking solution from Sharp. This space-saving appliance combines the advantages of the microwave drawer with a sleek electric cooktop, and is the ideal companion for a wall oven. Also fresh off the production floor at Sharp is the Superheated Steam Oven. It offers the benefits of steam cooking for foods that are roasted, grilled and even baked.
