Preparing for the unexpected is an industry standard
The world of modern construction is so much more than nuts and bolts. Cost consultancy has established itself as a leading consideration in a global industry.
For Rider Levett Bucknall, the brief for the Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre was to assist in establishing an appropriate budget, and manage the construction cost, during the project's design, tendering and construction phases.
Director Stephen Mee says that in order to achieve this task, the company worked intimately with Harry Seidler and Associates and the design team.
"This ensured the integrity of the major design elements was accommodated within the project budget," he says.
"The project was competitively tendered utilising a bill of quantities prepared by Rider Levett Bucknall. This original tender represented a smaller project design. Rider Levett Bucknall assisted the City of Sydney by negotiating a fair and reasonable contract sum for the larger, and final, project design."
"The building has a signature architectural design, with specialised structural steel and external wall and roof glazing systems. Our solution to effectively manage the project cost was to consult with the subcontractor market early in the design process. This ensured the accurate, market-relevant pricing was translated and adopted into the project cost plan."
