For many it was the decade that taste forgot, yet all things 1970s are making a comeback this time with a cultured touch. The colours are the same and the patterns are familiar, but the look has taken on an element of maturity.

The owners of this 1970s house have decided to embrace the era by combining all that was good about the period with a little modern technology, says Yellowfox designer Andrea Burney.

"While it may not seem that way to us, interior design of the 1970s was actually quite restrained after the exuberance and experimentation of the 1960s.

"Globally, the economic situation was fairly dire and there was a push to restore and modernise older buildings much like our current situation."

Dark, saturated colours were popular, and Burney has stayed true to the palette by using deep browns and avocado greens in the living area.

"To retain a sense of lightness and so as to not overwhelm the space, I've used these more as accent colours, tempered with neutrals to keep the whole scheme enlivened," says the designer.

Texture and pattern, both favourites in the 1970s, also make an appearance in this project. Again though, it is with a restrained approach. White textured tiles from Tile Warehouse were used for the splashback in the kitchen, while the tone-on-tone and monochromatic wallpapers have been used as statement elements.

Yellowfox specialises in providing design-led solutions for all interior and exterior projects. Strong associations with respected companies in the industry, such as Bestwood, means if there is anything Yellowfox isn't able to provide, the company is able to refer clients to another industry professional.
